A diving instructor operating in the Northern Mariana Islands is scheduled to be sentenced in U.S. federal court later this year, following a guilty plea to a child pornography charge.
According to court reporting by Marianas Variety and Marianas Press, William Saron Capayas is due to appear for sentencing on June 26 in the U.S. District Court for the Northern Mariana Islands, after admitting to possession of child sexual abuse material.
Capayas entered a guilty plea earlier this year, which was accepted by Chief Judge Ramona V. Manglona. The charge relates to illegal material discovered during a federal digital investigation. As part of the plea, no trial will take place.
The court has not yet disclosed sentencing recommendations or any mitigation submissions ahead of the June hearing. Under federal law, sentencing will be determined by statutory guidelines and judicial discretion.
No further charges were referenced in the reporting reviewed, and no public statement has been issued by Capayas or his legal representatives.
The Scuba News will continue to follow the case and report any developments based solely on confirmed court records and verified sources.
