Environmental champions and accomplished explorers Elsie Gabriel and Tanya Satish, both Associate Members of the prestigious Women Divers Hall of Fame, proudly announce their book for scuba divers on Ocean Literacy—a first-of-its-kind publication designed to empower scuba divers as frontline leaders in global marine conservation. As co-founders of the Ocean School India Foundation, Gabriel and Satish combine decades of hands-on exploration, scientific education, and community-based stewardship to create a powerful guide for divers dedicated to protecting the oceans during the critical UN Ocean Decade 2030.
A central theme of the book is the urgent need for divers—especially in developing countries—to lead with their deep, lived understanding of their coastal “ocean backyards.” Divers across the Global South witness firsthand the impacts of climate change, habitat loss, and pollution. Gabriel and Satish highlight how their local insights, cultural knowledge, and community relationships make them essential contributors to marine restoration and climate action.
The authors’ groundbreaking work with Indigenous communities, particularly youth and young girls, is also featured prominently. Through initiatives led by Ocean School India Foundation, Indigenous girls are introduced to scuba diving as a pathway to environmental leadership, blending traditional ecological knowledge with modern marine science.
