In a world-first, Palau’s President Surangel Whipps Jr. has conducted a live underwater interview beneath the Pacific Ocean. Wearing scuba gear, the President was joined by Estonian swimmer and ocean activist Merle Liivand, using cutting-edge Li-Fi technology to transmit the conversation through light instead of traditional radio waves.
The underwater broadcast carried a serious message: the Pacific island nation of Palau, home to around 18,000 people, is on the front line of the climate crisis. Rising sea levels, coral bleaching, and increasingly powerful storms are threatening its reefs and coastlines.
President Whipps’ symbolic dive follows similar climate appeals made by leaders from the Maldives, Seychelles, and Tuvalu, each drawing attention to the urgent need for global action to protect small island nations from the devastating impacts of climate change.
This groundbreaking underwater moment shows that the message is clear — the fight to save our oceans is already underwater.
