A 65-year-old swimmer is safe after a medical emergency at Port Dover Beach, thanks to the quick and brave response of a 12-year-old family member and a nearby bystander.
The incident occurred on Saturday, July 5, when emergency crews from the Norfolk County OPP, OPP Marine Unit, and Norfolk County Paramedic Services were called to the scene. The swimmer experienced a medical issue while in the water.
Noticing the swimmer was in trouble, the 12-year-old relative acted immediately, pulling them to shore. A bystander then stepped in to perform CPR, successfully reviving the individual. The swimmer was transported to hospital and is expected to recover, with no serious injuries reported.
The Norfolk OPP praised both the young family member and the bystander for their quick thinking and heroic efforts. They also reminded the public to prioritize water safety by wearing personal flotation devices, swimming with others, and choosing beaches monitored by lifeguards whenever possible.
