A recreational diving trip ended in tragedy for a 72-year-old man at Kampung Paya, Pulau Tioman, Malaysia.
According to a report from New Straits Times, the body of Low Choon Foi, a retired engineer from Johor Baru, was discovered on the beach around 7:40 p.m. on Friday evening.
Low had arrived on the island earlier that day with a group of 14 friends from Singapore. The group checked in at a local resort at approximately 10:30 a.m. and was scheduled to return home the following day.
District police chief Superintendent Sharif Shaif Mondoi confirmed in a statement that Low entered the water for a diving session at around 6:30 p.m. accompanied by a friend. Just over an hour later, the friend found Low unconscious by the shore with froth around his mouth and immediately alerted the resort staff.
Efforts were made to transport Low to the Kampung Tekek health clinic, where a doctor confirmed his death at 9:20 p.m. The incident was reported to the Pulau Tioman police station at 10:00 p.m.
Police officers arrived at the clinic’s emergency unit shortly thereafter. A physical examination was conducted, and no signs of foul play were found.
An investigation into the cause of death is ongoing.
