OceanGate
OceanGate Inc. was a privately held American company headquartered in Everett, Washington, specializing in manned submersible vehicles used for tourism, scientific research, industrial purposes, and exploration. Founded in 2009 by Stockton Rush and Guillermo Söhnlein, the company initially acquired a submersible named Antipodes and later developed two of its own vessels, Cyclops 1 and Titan.
In 2021, OceanGate began offering deep-sea expeditions to the Titanic shipwreck using the Titan submersible. By 2022, the cost for a seat on one of these missions was $250,000 per person.
Tragedy struck on June 18, 2023, when Titan catastrophically imploded during a dive to the Titanic site, resulting in the deaths of all five people on board, including co-founder Stockton Rush. A massive international search effort followed, and the submersible’s remains were discovered on June 22, approximately 500 meters (1,600 feet) from the Titanic wreck.
Following the incident, OceanGate’s Everett office was indefinitely closed on June 21, and the company announced the suspension of all operations on July 6. Gordon Gardiner took over as CEO in August 2023. With official investigations ongoing and no active operations, the company is currently considered defunct.
