A somber moment has touched the community of Northwest Nazarene University (NNU) following the tragic death of student Serena Bennett during a university-sponsored study trip in Ecuador. Bennett, who recently graduated with honors in Wildlife Biology and Ecology and also studied photography, passed away on Sunday, May 18, while participating in a scuba diving excursion.
The dive, conducted off the coast of Ecuador, involved a group of students and faculty, all of whom were certified and had undergone the appropriate training for the expedition. Despite swift action by university staff, dive team members, and medical personnel, efforts to save Bennett were not successful.
In the aftermath of the incident, NNU is prioritizing emotional and logistical support for Bennett’s family and for those directly affected by the tragedy. The university has extended its condolences and is encouraging the community to hold Serena’s loved ones in their thoughts and prayers.
