A scuba diving instructor based in Cozumel, a popular resort island in Mexico’s Caribbean, has been apprehended by the FBI in connection with multiple counts of aggravated sexual assault involving a minor.
The suspect, identified as Rogelio “Christopher” Guadalupe Gonzalez, 50, had been evading authorities since 2012 after fleeing from north Texas. Law enforcement officials in the United States had been actively seeking his whereabouts for over a decade.
Gonzalez was returned to the U.S. as part of “Project Welcome Home,” a government initiative designed to assist with the extradition of long-term fugitives by covering travel costs for law enforcement and repatriation expenses for the accused. He is currently being held in Johnson County Jail in Texas, where he awaits trial.
“This case highlights our office’s dedication to seeing justice served—regardless of how long it takes or where a fugitive may hide,” said Johnson County Assistant District Attorney Christy May. “We deeply appreciate the support of our federal partners in making this extradition possible.”
