Full Name: Suzanne Gerber
Age: 50+
Live In: Brooklyn, NY
Working For: self-employed journalist and marketing associate, World of Diving (www.worldofdiving.com)
Diver Qualifications: Master Diver, Naui (670 dives)
When and where did you start diving?
1999. First dives: Provo, Turks & Caicos

Why did you start diving?
Fell in love with dolphins and the life aquatic in 1998, on an 8-day liveaboard in Bimini, swimming with wild dolphins

What made you choose to become a dive professional?
I met Will McFarland, the owner of World of Diving, on a dive boat in the Caymans and was immediately impressed with him, his integrity and his company. I wanted to be more immersed in the dive world, he needed help, and a professional relationship just developed.

Which is your favourite dive site and why?
I love every place I’ve been in Indonesia. Also huge fan of Micronesia and most recently fell in love with Sipadan (where the attached photo was shot).

What has been the most memorable dive of your life and why?
That’s really hard to pick, but possibly my first dive at Rangiroa, with at least 300 gray reef sharks and about a 7-knot current. Only dive in my life where I sucked down my whole tank.

If you would come back as a marine life form in your next life, what would that be?
That one’s easy: Atlantic bottlenose dolphin. They live for pleasure and joy.

Who is your dream dive buddy?
I’ve been lucky to had two amazing ones for a decade: Renée McNamara and John Ross.

What dive locations are on your dream “bucket list” and why?
More Borneo, Raja Ampat, Kimodo/Flores, Solomon Is.

What is on your bedside table right now?
Books, my prayer beads and a picture of an enlightened teacher.

What is your favourite piece of diving equipment and why?
I love my Henderson hyperstretch 5mm. Easy on, easy off, and keeps me toasty. Also love my Mares split-fins with cable backs.

If you were to launch a campaign to raise awareness on a specific issue that affects divers, the oceans or marine life, what issue would you target and why? Everything! Protecting the marine eco system, enforcing laws against predatory fishing methods (long line & trawling, dynamite fishing, overfishing), shark (and manta) finning, disrespectful divers, pollution….

Where will you be in 10 years and what will you be doing?
I will be somewhere in Asia, running a holistic healing center and hopefully diving several times a month!
