Fatboys Resort on Mbabanga Island has officially unveiled a new SSI-certified dive centre, bringing on-site training, upgraded equipment, and direct access to the region’s celebrated wrecks and reefs. The launch strengthens Gizo’s standing as one of the Solomon Islands’ most accessible and diverse dive destinations.
The new facility features a dedicated wet room, twin compressor systems, around 20 sets of brand-new equipment, and covered dive boats fitted with oxygen and first-aid gear. Operations are led by an SSI instructor alongside certified local divemasters, offering courses from beginner to advanced, as well as daily guided dives to nearby sites including the Toa Maru wreck and Joe’s Wall.
According to Tourism Solomons, the dive centre represents a milestone in the country’s tourism development, with local training and employment forming part of the resort’s expansion goals. The Solomon Star described the launch as “a step forward in positioning Gizo as a leading Pacific dive hub.”
Guest feedback has already begun to surface. A reviewer on TripAdvisor praised the convenience of having “a dive centre right on your doorstep” and highlighted the friendliness of staff. On Viator, early guests noted the resort’s “warm hospitality” and “immaculate new dive setup,” though a few mentioned the typical island-time pace during boat departures.
While full operations are still bedding in, the Fatboys Resort Facebook page confirm the dive centre is now open and running scheduled trips. Divers planning to visit should verify course availability and boat timetables when booking.
For travellers seeking a laid-back Pacific escape with first-class diving, Fatboys’ new centre adds another compelling reason to explore the reefs and wrecks that make Gizo one of the Solomon Islands’ signature underwater destinations.
