A 67-year-old scuba diver has died following a night dive at Redondo Beach Park in Des Moines, Washington. The King County Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the victim as Jeffery Alan Christiansen of Olalla.
The incident occurred on the evening of August 25, when Christiansen suffered a medical emergency while diving in Puget Sound. Fellow divers managed to bring him to the surface and pull him ashore, where South King Fire & Rescue crews performed CPR. Sadly, despite extensive efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Two other divers involved in the rescue made a rapid ascent and were taken to local hospitals for observation. Their conditions have not been reported.
The Des Moines Police Department is leading the investigation, while the Medical Examiner has listed Christiansen’s cause and manner of death as pending. Authorities have clarified that rumors of electrocution circulating on social media were unfounded. A nearby electrical fire caused a power outage shortly before the incident, but it was unrelated to the dive emergency.
Redondo Beach Park, located along the 28200 block of Redondo Beach Drive South, is a well-known Puget Sound dive site popular with the Pacific Northwest diving community.
