Preliminary information suggests the vessel involved was named Maranatha and is owned by Fernán “S”. Witnesses allege the boat entered the area at high speed and failed to heed warnings about divers in the water. There are also claims that the boat did not have the required permits from the National Commission of Natural Protected Areas to operate in the reef zone.
Authorities say the accident was not reported immediately. The Director of Protección Civil Cozumel has acknowledged the seriousness of the situation and an investigation is underway.
