After a long and wet winter, spring is officially here, and this means scallops! The 2016 Scallop season is now open as at 1st September 2016. Before you head out to collect your fill, there are a few key things to remember:
Has your gear been serviced in the last year?
Are your Dive tanks in test?
The key factor to keep you out of trouble: KNOW YOUR LIMITS.
The daily quota for individuals collecting Scallops is 20 per day but if diving from a boat up to two extra quotas may be taken for safety/boat people. If you gear is in need of a service, drop in to Dive Zone and our qualified service technician will look after all your needs. Typically gear should be serviced annually with tanks requiring a test every 2 years for a Hydrostatic test and 1 year for a visual test.
In regards to diving conditions of late, we have good reports of 10m+ visibility. They also managed to bring home a few fat scallops – which hopefully signals a good season ahead! The Water temperature is on the rise with 15-16 degrees recorded so far. For all those crayfish lovers, the reports are few and far between with a lot still in Berry but there is still the odd catch out there.
