Shipwrecks in the Thames – A Virtual Tour
January 25 @ 15:00 - 16:00£
Footprints of London presents an online virtual event, “Shipwrecks in the Thames”.
This presentation covers the tales of sunken ships in England’s Thames River from the Roman era to the present day. The River Thames is a river that runs through London and southern England. It is the longest river in England and the second-longest in the United Kingdom, after the Severn River, at 215 miles (346 km). Over 80 islands are located in the river, the Thames supports a range of wildlife and has a number of adjoining Special Scientific Interest Areas, with its waters ranging from freshwater to almost seawater.
It is not shocking, with so many ships visiting London throughout history, that the Thames has seen thousands of shipwrecks. This virtual tour tells the tale of twelve ships sunk in the Thames, from a Roman cargo ship to a mysterious Cold War sinking. Rob will show you photos and maps to accompany the chat, which will be delivered over Zoom, and he will send you some suggestions of places to visit to find out more about ships like the ship of the 17th century whose sinking shocked Samuel Pepys or the ship full of explosives that still sits at the bottom of the Thames Estuary.
Footprints of London offers unique and fascinating walks around London, and virtual tours and discussions online, offered by independent guides.
