A tourist has been charged with attempted murder following an incident on a snorkelling tour off the coast of Hawaii’s Big Island.
According to a report by WJHG News, citing information from Hawaii-based broadcaster KHNL, the incident took place during a commercial snorkel trip near Kona.
Authorities allege that a 21-year-old visitor from Kansas attacked a 62-year-old boat captain with a knife during the excursion. The captain, identified in reports as Stanley Lurbiecki, sustained multiple stab wounds.
Emergency services responded after the vessel returned to harbour. The captain was transported to hospital and is reported to be in stable condition.
Police arrested the suspect at the scene. He has been charged with attempted murder and is being held on bail set at approximately $1.57 million.
Local reports indicate that the captain is an experienced operator with decades of time on the water. Investigators have not yet released further details regarding the circumstances leading up to the incident.
The case remains under investigation, and no additional information has been confirmed at this stage.
