We’re launching a special project with documentary photographer Colin Boyd Shafer on November 19, 2020. The project shares 20 tales of the deep personal ties of people to Lake Erie.
Lake Erie is the fourth-largest lake (by surface area) of the five Great Lakes in North America, and if measured in terms of surface area, the eleventh largest, globally. It is the Great Lakes’s southernmost, shallowest, and smallest by volume and thus has the shortest average residence time for water. Lake Erie is 210 feet (64 metres) deep at its deepest point.
Erie people, the Native American people who lived along its southern shore, named the lake. A shortened version of the Iroquoian word erielhonan, meaning long tail, is the tribal name “Erie”‘.
