Late December and early January see the north east monsoon settle in with winds from the north east brining the traditional ‘high season’ period of drier conditions to the Maldives. Ocean currents have changed direction and are bringing blue water to the eastern side of the atolls, providing perfect conditions to visit the shark-filled channels in the central southern atolls (South Male, Felidhoo and Mulaku). Plankton filled water is pushed out on the west side and the mantas start to appear at our favourite western sites like Madivaru in South Ari Atoll. Also, the southern edge of Ari Atoll is sheltered, so we can go looking for whalesharks too!
This all means that the diving at Christmas and New Year is fabulous, offering the full spectrum of Maldives highlights.
