Burma diving highlight – a Giant Manta Ray

At the end of February 2015, Thailand Dive and Sail will depart on the fifth Manta Ray Of Hope Expedition to Myanmars Mergui Archipelago in co-operation with the Marine Megafauna Foundation. On the last four expeditions they had many repeat customers onboard, and  didn’t announce the expeditions upfront to a wider audience. The goal of the expedition is to examine movement patterns of manta rays in the eastern part of the Indian Ocean and to complete a global database of manta ray individuals and their general movements. These expeditions are crucial to manta ray research: as these marine creatures travel great distances, their movements are not easily traceable for scientists and what’s more, these researchers do not have the funds to observe these gentle giants worldwide. The research is directly financed by the trip fees of the expedition participants. All detailed information to the 2015 Ray of Hope Expedition to Myanmar:

Recent Ray of Hope trips provided enough data to contribute to the worldwide protection of manta rays on the 2012 CITIES convention in Bangkok.
